First Doctor Visit

Well, technically this was probably not her first doctor's visit -- a pediatrician visits Hannah's Hope regularly, and Isabella had a couple of exams there.  This was Isabella's first visit to a doctor's office though.  She is officially 25.5 inches and 14.9 pounds, with a head circumferance of 17 inches.

The exam went well:  Isabella is perfectly perfect - and healthy! - in every way.  The wheezing is a lingering symptom of GERD, which she is outgrowing; it should continue to subside over the next few weeks as she continues to develop.

Our biggest decision was what to do about Isabella's immunizations.  The record of shots that she received in Ethiopia was sketchy.  Niether we nor our doctor were comfortable trusting the record, and a blood test to confirm the antibodies in her system is cost-prohibitive.

We followed our doctor's recommendation, and started her with her 4 month shots.  Even if she has not effectly had her 2 month shots, by the time she is one year old, she will have "caught up" and the immunizations will be effective.  We are not concerned about the possibility of repeating some immunizations, because what most physicians, including our family doctor, say about immunization safety makes a lot of sense to us.

Shots were traumatic.  Against a lot of the attachment advice out there, I opted to stay with her - I couldn't leave her alone - but by the end of three shots in her legs and a heal poke, I was ready to cry with her.  Poor baby!

P.S. My eyes are almost back to normal, and my energy is slowly coming back as well. Imagined health problems averted! If I could just get myself on Isabella's schedule and sleep from 8:30 p.m. - 4:30 a.m. I would be doing even better. I just cannot make myself go to sleep that early though!

  1. Love your sweet family & darling little girl. I encourage you to read up on the vaccines, though-- especially multiple simultaneous vaccines! I recently did 3 posts on the topic at this blog: http://www.keeperofthehome.org/2011/02/the-thoughtful-parents-guide-to-thinking-through-vaccinations.html

Vaccines are drugs; very powerful ones. Giving many drugs at one time to anyone- especially a very small person- has the potential for bad reactions!

    I hope these resources help!
