Packing List

We have FINALLY finished organizing the donation tubs by category and priority.  Each 22-gallon tub has snap-down handles, we added a luggage strap around the middle, and we labeled each with the address of Hannah's Hope in case they get lost in transit.
  • Tubs 1 & 2:  washable sanitary pads, bags and underwear for Project 61 students.
  • Tub 3: 370 ounces of formula, 64 ounces of rice cereal, 300 baby wipes, 32 ounces of Desitin cream, 2 large bottles of children's Advil, 5 ounces of infant gas drops, 28 pedialyte powder packs, and miscellaneous items like twin fitted sheet, slippers, and youth underwear.
  • Tub 4: 14 developmental toys for infants and toddlers, 13 hot wheels cars, 6 mini princess dolls, batteries, 4 Disney DVDs, sunglasses, and miscellaneous items like soap, deodorant, band aids, and underwear.
  • Tub 5: 464 baby wipes, 422 diapers, and miscellaneous items.
  • Tub 6: 20 lbs. unground organic flax seed, 17 pairs of sandals, toy train tracks & engines.
  • Tub 7:  girl/boy toddler/teen clothes, sidewalk chalk, underwear and other miscellaneous items.
  • Tub 8: girl/boy toddler/teen shoes, sandals, jeans, pants, shirts.
We are automatically allowed 2 checked luggage items each, but continue to pray that we will be allowed at least 2 extra items at no fee, so that we can take at least tubs 1 - 6 on this first trip (leaving us space for even more donation tubs on trip #2).  Pray!

Next, my carry-on bags (one 21" x 8" x 16" bag, up to 17 pounds, and one handbag).
  • Clothes:   lightweight waterproof jacket, 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of lightweight slacks, 3 lightweight shirts, 2 tank-tops (to wear under shirts), 1 pair pjs, 6 pairs socks & underwear, slippers.  (Love the travel space bags!)
  • Mini-Pharmacy:  Advil, Advil pm, tums, Cipro, scabies cream, ear plugs, deodorant, Imodium AD, Sudafed, throat lozenges, soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, vitamins, first aid kit, mouthwash, moisturizer, floss, toothbrush, makeup, hair brush, bug spray, tissue, wet wipes.
  • For Isabella: photo album, two outfits, hair bows, tights, shoes, rattles, baby carrier.
  • Documents folder: travel info, POA, addresses, telephone numbers, list of to-do photos for other families, photocopy of passport, travel cheat sheet, pre-arranged family Skype schedule, donation letter.
  • Electronics:  laptop, cell phone/charger for U.S. travel leg, video and photo cameras, batteries, power adapter plugs, camera USB cord.
  • For flight/downtime:  books, snacks, gum, neck pillow.
  • Money belt:  passport, dollars, euro for layover, Visa credit card, debit card.
  • Miscellaneous: journal, pens, water bottle, flashlight, ice cube tray, pillow cases, flip flops, garbage bags for hotel room, Lysol wipes, index cards, shopping bag, wristwatch, sunglasses.
I'm looking at the clock: 151 hours to go.  So much still to do, and yet the time is dragging on...

  3. Packing is so personal. I packed a flashlight because I hate stumbling around in the dark when the power goes off, as it often does in Addis. I'm not taking a calculator, although it is recommended, because I'm fine doing the math conversion for Birr to Dollars in my head. I am taking an ice cube tray because I must have ice in my water bottle, but I may be the only one in the world with this personal issue! Space is so tight, and every little thing adds up. On Trip 2, we will *have* to use some space in one of the checked tubs for Isabella's stuff... diapers, formula, bottles, toys, etc.

  5. Angela, thank you for the organized list. It really does help to look at a few different lists in hope of not forgetting anything! I love how you got so many donations! We are looking forward to quite a few bins as well, as our church continues to bring in supplies. Praying for your travels. Can't wait to hear more. Looks like we will just be missing eachother on this first trip. We leave on the 2nd.
